What’s the purpose

To visualize your pitch on a one-pager so that you can request investment from investors either internally or externally.

How to do it

  1. People backing your idea want to hear two things: 1. who is the team behind the product, how committed they are and what relevant skills they bring to the table; and 2. Why You? is about the person giving the pitch in front of the audience.
  2. Either as a team or individually, start brainstorming, get the board messy to get everything you might say about your business idea, change or plan out of your head. Doing this will help to organize your thoughts for the next step.
  3. Now, take a step back, and remove or rewrite sticky notes to focus on the critical points you don’t want people to forget.
  4. Once completing the board, take your pitch time (3-minute or 15-minute), select your areas, and practice your presentation. If you are focused on winning an investment, then Problem, Differentiator & Value Proposition, Customer Segments & Traction, Business Model, Investment, and Team & Skills are essential to pitch.

Helpful tips

  • If you’ve already created a business canvas, you can build on this for your investment pitch.
  • Spend time gathering any essential information you need from other stakeholders before starting.
  • Be creative and find your way to structure your pitch. You want your pitch to be compelling where every point is impactful (details later), concise with enough information to capture your audience’s attention without overwhelming them and telling a story in a logical thrilling flow.
  • Once you’ve finished, get somebody else with a fresh pair of eyes to read your investment pitch and incorporate any helpful feedback.

Using this method in your day-to-day work

Think about the next big decision you are trying to get your boss or even a customer to make, work through the questions in the Investment pitch to consider which elements might be helpful to include in convincing your audience to make that key decision.
